The Egham Band, est. 1895

The Egham Band is a community driven, first section brass band based in Egham, Surrey. The band enjoys performing at esteemed local events, themed concerts, formal parades, and the annual Area contests of the National Brass Band Championships.
The Egham Band’s extensive history dates back to 1895, and the formation of the Egham Town Band; however, the brass playing roots of the area can be traced even further back to 1855. The heritage of The Egham Band – though it has been known by several names over the past century – is celebrated on the walls of its own purpose-built band hall, which has homed the band since the 70s. Today, the band hall is host to four bands under Egham’s organisational umbrella: the Training, Youth and Community bands, and, of course, The Egham Band!
The band is proud to support the Egham Youth Brass Project, an instrumental teaching programme that goes into local schools encouraging the next generation to preserve the rich tradition of brass banding for many years to come. In 2024, The Egham Band was selected as one of two mayoral chosen charities in Runnymede for the 2024-25 year.

The Egham Band Youth Brass Project

Background

Following the end of the government funded music scheme aimed at introducing children to playing musical instruments The Egham Band has started taking Brass music back into our schools.

The project has now been running for seven years, after two years of planning and preparation we rolled out to St Jude's CofE Junior School, Englefield Green in Sept 2018, and Thorpe CofE Primary School joined the project in Sept 2019.

In the summer of 2020 Egham Training Band was restarted for those members of St Jude’s Brass that were leaving St Jude’s providing a place where they can continue to learn as a group as well as perform in front of an audience.

Manorcroft School became the third school that we teach in, joining the project in September 2022.
 

Today

We are currently teaching Brass to around 180 children from five Year 4 classes, three school bands, Egham Training Band and Egham Youth Band.

Future

Not only do we plan to continue the project we have ambitions, when the time is right, and when funding is in place, to expand the project to further schools in Runnymede.

Fundraising is an ever important part of our project as with anything in life nothing comes free. To date we have raised funds to purchase around 140 pCornets, 30 pBones and 30 jHorns to enable us to loan the students one each so they are able to take them home to practice and play together. We have also started a scheme where we hire out metal instruments to our school bands ETB and EYB so that children and parents can ‘try before they invest’.

We are very grateful for the donations we have received and continue to receive without which we would be unable to continue to run the project and expand.
